Should You Try a Low Carb Fad Diet?

August 30th, 2011

Have you thought about trying a low carb fad diet? Before you commit yourself to the latest low carb fad diet, you’ll want to check out the scientific evidence behind these weight loss plans.

Low carb and no carb diet plans assert that you will lose weight if you severely limit the number of carbs you eat each day. The facts behind this diet plan is that a low carb diet will reduce your body’s dependence on insulin, since the diet keeps your blood sugar level low. High levels of insulin in your blood stream can result in your body storing excess calories as fat. Because of this change in insulin production, you will lose weight if you cut your carb consumption severely.

However, most of these low carb plans don’t limit how many calories you can consume. A recent study by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the Natitional Institutes of Health counters this assertion. The study measured the success rates of 800 adults on a variety of diet plans, including low carb diets. The end conclusion was you must limit caloric intake if you want to lose weight long term.

Low carb fad diet plans also don’t account for dealing with cravings that come up. Your body requires carbs for energy, so the cravings can be too much to resist.

One last concern is the serious loss of energy most people on these diets experience. Carbohydrates are necessary for energy, especially if you want to combine exercise with your diet plan. If you don’t eat carbs, it’s very challenging to perform well athletically. Many people find it impossible to exercise at all until they resume eating carbs.

Now you know the truth about low carb fad diets.

An Exercise Bike Alternative

August 27th, 2011

If you find yourself enjoying the exercise bike at the gym and are considering purchasing one, you might want to consider a second option. Do you currently own a bike? If you do, a bike trainer may be a better route to go. This option can save you both storage space and money. A trainer is a stand you hook your bike onto that provides resistance either through the use of air, fluid, or magnetism. One of the largest benefits is the small amount of room they take up in comparison to a traditional exercise bike.

There are three different types of trainers each with their own qualities. You will have to determine which of them is the best fit for your. Wind trainers use a fan to create resistance with the air that you work against. They are the cheapest of the three, however they are very loud when pedaling. Yet they work well for beginners as the resistance generated is generally on the lighter side. The harder your pedal the more resistance is gained.

Magnet trainers are a great mid level trainer. The price is comparable to a wind trainer and beginners to intermediate riders may find this style practical. They are quiet in comparison to wind, however the quality of resistance isn’t the same level as a fluid.

Fluid trainers are tht top of the line, feeling similar to riding on the road with your bike. However they are generally more expensive, and do have their own problems. Using a “fan” encased in liquid to create resistance, it is considerably more complex than it’s counterparts which leads to more wear and tear over it’s lifetime. Some models seem to have a problem with leaking.

Tips to Improve Your Freestyle Swim Workouts

August 24th, 2011

If you like to swim freestyle, you’ll benefit from these reliable swim stroke exercises, all of which will strengthen your stroke and improve your times.

For the best all-body workout, you’ll want to switch up your styles instead of doing an entire workout in one stroke. You’ll benefit from doing some breaststroke, a lot of freestyle, some kickboarding, and using a few props. Begin your practice with freestyle laps, being sure to always reach forward, extending as far as possible with each stroke, and letting the stroke glide in front of you before pulling down. Focus on pulling through the water with force, pushing the water behind you, making sure not to cross the stroke across your body or push the water to the sides. Make sure your kicks are strong and coming from the hip, and that your knees are only slightly bent. Keep your movements smooth, gliding along, refusing to thrash or splash in the water. The smoother and stronger the moves, the better the times.

Use paddles to add resistance and build muscles, trying to get across the pool with as few breaths as possible. Then switch it up by taking off the paddles and swimming a couple lengths with your hands clenched into fists. When you resume your regular freestyle, you’ll notice the difference. You’ll be so delighted by how powerful your hands feel that you’ll stroke harder and be faster.

Work out until you’ve worn out those shoulders (but not so long that you risk injury), and then switch to using a kickboard. Rest your upper body (it may feel good to stretch your arms out over the board) and kick, propelling yourself forward with long, deep, straight-legged kicks. Make the kicks long and powerful, using all of your legs. Kickboard until you feel the burn. While still on the kickboard, switch to a breaststroke kick, exercising your legs in a new way.

End your workout with more freestyle laps, using your best technique. Try to make these your best laps yet.

Do Your Sensitive Teeth Cause You Problems?

August 21st, 2011

For those who suffer from sensitivity in their teeth eating can be incredibly painful. It is always advisable to see a dentist to determine the reason you have painful or sensitive teeth. There are many reasons tooth sensitivity may occur. Weak enamel is sometimes caused by genetics.  This can be a factor in sensitivity. You could have gum recession and the softer dentin of the root is beginning to show and is being warn away. Cavities and age are also factors in tooth sensitivity.

There are toothpastes such as Sensodyne and Pronamel Sensitive that help to deal with sensitivity in teeth. Your teeth have naturally occurring tubes in them that can be plugged by these special pastes.  This cuts down on pain. For these toothpastes to work they need to be the soul toothpaste used. It is smart to avoid whitening toothpastes and hydrogen peroxide whitening if you suffer from sensitivity.

Soft or ultra soft toothbrushes are an absolute necessity for sensitive teeth and gum recession issues. If you brush your teeth with medium and hard bristle brushes you run the risk of wearing down the gums.  This ultimately exposes the root dentin. The tops (enamel) of our teeth is very hard.  Dentin is much softer in comparison. Sensitivity can be caused by brushing the dentin too hard and ultimately begin to wear the dentin down.

Proper brushing can help to decrease the likelihood of tooth sensitivity. The bristles of your brush should be at a 45-degree angle to the teeth and gums. You should be brushing in small circles verses back and forth. This reduces wear on any exposed dentin. Also, if you can afford it, check out an electric toothbrush they are well worth the cost.

Always avoid mouthwashes with high alcohol. This can dry out the mouth and contribute further to already existing problems. Flossing is very important to the health of your teeth and gums. Waxed or unwaxed doesn’t matter, what matters is just doing it.

Dentist must see a patient that has sensitive teeth.  It is very important to your teeth and gums to determine what may be going on. Although a toothpaste change may help, you should still get checked out to make sure you don’t have a larger problem beginning.

How To Do Yoga On The Beach

August 15th, 2011

For a yoga addict, there are not many things more enjoyable and relaxing than doing a bit of yoga on the beach, but before you can go out there and start in with your yoga, you will need to make sure you are taking the proper steps to properly do yoga on the beach!

Clothing: A lot of people make the mistake of trying to do yoga on the beach in the same clothes they would usually wear to the beach, but rather than wearing a small bikini, you should try to dress the way you always dress when doing yoga. This will allow you to be comfortable and have a full range of motion without showing off more of your body than you might have intended to.

Yoga For Anyone!

Time and location: Yoga is intended to be something that relaxes you, but if you end up in an area with a lot of kids running around or college students drinking and yelling, it will not be very relaxing at all! Choose a flat area – preferably with packed sand, such as you will find after the tide has gone out – that is far enough away from all the other action of the beach that it will be peaceful and quiet enough for your yoga.

Face the sun – or don’t: Although you will often hear yogis advising you to face the sun during your yoga routine – especially when you are doing yoga outside – this is a rule that is made to be broken (if you want!) when you are on the beach. Facing the ocean while doing your yoga can provide the optimal amount of relaxation and unwinding, so if you find this to be the case for yourself, you should not worry about where the sun is so much as you should pay attention to the ocean and its soothing effect!

Discover Simple Yoga Secrets!

Once you put all these things together, you can enjoy some yoga on the beach that will help you unwind and relax like nearly nothing else can!

Tips For Feeling Younger

August 12th, 2011

The older you get, the more you will have a tendency to feel a desire to “still feel young”; not that this is so much an instance of feeling discontent, or of wanting to be in a different stage of your life than the one in which you are currently in, but more so that you will start to realize – as you get older – all the things you took for granted when you were younger! As you start to advance in age, you will naturally feel a regression in the way you feel in certain areas, but while it is important that you are aware of this, there are also a number of things you can do in order to improve the way you feel even as you advance in age.

Your mind: Although the regression of your mind will be less immediately evident than the regression of your body, you will still want to make sure you are doing everything you can to keep your mind strong and “young” – and the best thing you can do to accomplish this is for you to keep your mind regularly engaged in things that are both enjoyable and challenging for it, such as brain games and other fun, brain-teasing puzzles!

Your muscles: You will have a tendency to spend more and more time sitting around on your bottom as you get older; while it is nice to relax at times, it is also nice for your muscles to remain in total working order, so make sure you are still moving around and remaining active, even as you have an excuse to simply sit around!

Your joints: Keeping your joints young will take a lot of the same things as keeping your muscles young – but you will also want to walk and swim regularly in order to strengthen your joints.

Even though it will not be possible for you to prevent yourself from aging, you can still take these steps to help your mind and body to continue feeling young, even as you age!

Working Out To Build Muscle Mass

August 6th, 2011

When you have decided to work out, it will usually have been with one of two specific goals in mind. the first aim of working out is to help you tone your muscles and lose weight; the second aim many people have is to build muscle mass through their workouts. Regardless of which of these two is your own goal, you need to know what it takes to accomplish them. This is especailly true when it comes to building muscle mass, as it can be extremely frustrating to push yourself in your workouts every day, only to find you are not getting any bigger!

In order to understand how to build muscle mass when working out, it is good to first understand what happens when you work out.

The way that working out works is by tearing your muscles; when you work out, you tear the muscles in your body just a little bit. When your workout ends, your body gets to work attempting to repair all these small tears in your body. If you give the same muscles the same workout every day, you will tear the same muscles in the same way every day, and your body will keep working every day to repair these muscles. Your muscles will start to tighten because of this, as they will always be working to try and repair themselves. If you wait two or three days, however, before working out the same muscles again, your muscles will have time to fully repair before this followup workout. In this way – as you continue to let your muscles repair completely before tearing them again – you will end up with muscles that continue to grow larger.

As you see, all it takes – in order to build muscle mass – is that you give each set of muscles a day or two off before you work them out again. And if you want to build your muscle mass even more quickly, you should aim to pack your body with protein shortly after each of your workouts end. And as time passes, you can watch your muscles grow and grow.

August 3rd, 2011

Are you concerned about your child’s weight, but don’t know where to start? Try these healthy snacks to break your junk food addict of his or her bad habits.

Start out with fresh fruit of any kind. Let your child choose some new fruits at the grocery store and then have a fun fruit tasting party at home. Try the exotic stuff alongside the everyday.

Try serving air popped popcorn (without butter, please). Barely mist the popcorn and then salt it. To satisfy a sweet tooth, toss popcorn with a small amount of reduced-calorie maple syrup–it’ll taste liek caramel corn.

Get a bag of those pretzel thins and top with slivers of cheese. Try using a strong-flavored cheese so you won’t need much to flavor the pretzels.

Boil up some eggs. Kids love to peel the eggs, and the protein will keep them full for a long time. Serve them with salt and pepper.

Make your kids some ants on a log. Spread a modest amount of peanut butter on celery sticks and then place raisins or minitaure chocolate chips on top (which are the ants).

Offer plates of veggetables with salad dressing on the side. Older kids may like to use a knife to carve the veggies into flowers and shapes.

Try seasoned, cooked shrimp. Boil shrimp with Cajun spices and then let them peel and eat these high-protein, low-calorie snacks.

Make roll ups out of lunch meat and cheese. Serve this treat with toothpicks, as little rolls of any lean meats with little slices of cheese rolled up inside them.

Fruit smoothies. Blend frozen fruit and low cal juice and serve with a crazy straw. Feel free to add yogurt if your kids like them tangy and creamy.

Introduce your kids to Greek yogurt. Greek yogurt packs twice the protein of regular yogurt and comes in nonfat varieties. You can even get it in chocolate!

If you model healthy eating habits, your kids will be more likely to eat healthfully as well. For more suggestions, check out a healthy eating cookbook.

Taking A Look At Three Easy Ways To Stay Healthy

July 28th, 2011

Taking good care of your body and mind, making sure they remain healthy, will be one of the most important things in your life, and while most people are aware of this, the approaches people take toward staying healthy often become so complex and complicated that no one is able to keep up with them. While a lot of these complex approaches to staying healthy are certainly beneficial to keep in mind, it is even more important for you to keep the simple things in mind – as these are the things you will be able to keep up with throughout the entirety of your life, and these are also the things that will make the biggest difference in how healthy you are.

Remain active: Most people put a lot of emphasis on the idea of “exercising,” or on other approaches to keeping their body in good shape, but while exercise is certainly helpful, the most important thing of all is that you make sure you are remaining active – even at those times when you do not especially feel like “working out.”

Drink water: One of the important things people often neglect, in spite of all the diet crazes they get into, is drinking as much water as they should; water is the most important thing you can put into your body, and you can keep yourself much healthier than you otherwise could if you simply drink a gallon of water each day.

Laugh: The saying “laughter is the best medicine” is heard so often that it loses its impact on most people, but even though it might seem like something that is simply nice to say, it is also true: laughter will keep your body and mind healthy in a way that nothing else can!

Chasing more complex and complicated approaches to staying healthy is certainly not bad, but even as you look into some of these different approaches to health, make sure you are also keeping these things in mind, as they will keep you healthy for a long time to come.
